A demanding vegetable producing rewarding results for those gardeners with skill, determination and a long growing season.
Culture: Start seed indoors in a soil-less grower mix 10-12 weeks before last frost date. Germination will take from 2 to 3 weeks at 21-24 C (70-75 F) after which temperature can be lowered to 16-21 C (60-70 F).
Do not transplant outside until soil has warmed and night temperatures have moderated - this generally occurs from mid May through to mid June. A fertile, well-drained soil with a pH of 6.5 to 7.0 will produce the best crop. Set plants 15-20 cm (6-8") apart in rows 60-90 cm (24-36") apart. Feed the young plants with a general vegetable fertilizer 4 to 6 weeks after transplanting.
For the best quality and taste, it is very important to keep the plants evenly watered for the entire growing season. Blanche the stalks by gradually hilling up the stems with earth. This can be started when the plants are roughly 30 cm (12") high.
