Culture: Leeks grow best in a sunny site with fertile, well-drained soil. It is best to start the seed inside in February-March. Sow seed about 7 mm (1/4") deep. Transplant out later in the spring when they are around 20 cm (8") tall. Select the largest seedlings, as they will grow the best leeks. Space the transplants about 10-15 cm (4-6") apart in the row with the rows 30-45 cm (12-18") apart. Plant them quite deep as it is only necessary to keep 2.5-5 cm (1-2") of the leaves above ground.
In longer season areas, leeks can be directly seeded in April to June. Dig a trench 12.5 cm (5") deep then plant the seed about 6 mm (1/4") deep at the bottom of the trench. Thin seedlings to 15 cm (6") apart and fill in the trench as the seedlings grow. Keep the plants evenly watered and the growing area clear of any weeds. Leeks will benefit from a light application of a high nitrogen fertilizer early in the season.
