A challenge for the gardener, a visual delight for the eyes and a culinary treat for the taste buds!
Culture: While cultural requirements are much like lettuce, radicchio does present more of a challenge for the gardener. Sow seed direct in the garden in mid-spring about 12 mm (1/2") deep in rows 40 cm (16") apart. Thin seedlings to 30 cm (12") apart. A rich organic soil is very beneficial and as radicchio is shallow rooted, consistent soil moisture is very important. Use a light mulch around the plants to help control weeds and maintain even soil moisture. Avoid high nitrogen fertilizer as this can cause plants to bolt to seed prematurely and become very bitter tasting. The heads form best in cooler weather.
