What you need to know to Plant & Grow

  • Sowing: Start seed indoors in a soil-less growing medium in February—the earlier the better, as the bigger the transplant, the better the mature onion will be. If possible, start seeds in a cold-frame to get a jump on the season. Seed can also be sown directly outdoors from mid-April, 8-15 mm deep and 15 mm apart in rows 30 cm apart. One packet sows approximately 6 m of row.
  • Care: Onions do best in a sunny site with fertile, well-drained soil. Thin seedlings to 12.5 cm apart. Bend over any flower stalks that start to grow so the plant’s energy goes into building the bulb.
  • Harvesting: Ready in about 140 days. Harvest bulbs when the tops start to yellow and fall over. Remember, this is not a long-term storage onion, so plan to use them fresh.
  • Germination: Germination takes approximately 1-2 weeks (7-14 days).
