Heirloom basil is prized for its intense fragrance, complex flavour profiles, and historical significance. Unlike many modern hybrids, these traditional varieties carry the authentic, deep notes that define classic culinary traditions.

  • Growing Essentials: Basil is a sun-worshipper that thrives in warm, well-drained, fertile soil. It is highly sensitive to cold, so wait until all frost danger has passed and the soil is thoroughly warmed before moving plants outdoors.

  • Sowing: Start seeds indoors 6 weeks before the last frost. If sowing directly, ensure the soil temperature remains consistently warm.

  • Care: Pinch back the growing tips once plants reach 15 cm in height to encourage bushier growth. Regularly remove flower buds as they appear; allowing the plant to flower will divert energy away from leaf production and can alter the flavour.

  • Harvesting: Frequent harvesting of the top leaves promotes continuous production. Basil is best enjoyed fresh, but it also preserves well when dried or turned into pesto.
