Description

Caraway Seeds 3015. Heirloom Herb.

Approx. 350 seeds/pkt (400 seeds/gram)

Caraway seeds (harvested from the plant) are used to flavour bread, pastry, cakes, confections, cheeses, sauces and soups.  Fresh leaves can be used as a garnish in vegetable dishes. Plants grow from 45-60 cm (1.5-2′) high. Caraway is a biennial, hardy in zones 5 to 8. It is grown as an annual in lower hardiness zones. Do not eat the seeds that come in the packet; these are for planting only.

How to Grow

In Zones 5 to 8, start seed directly outdoors in a sunny area early September or mid-spring. In lower hardiness zones, sow seed directly outdoors in mid-spring. Sow seed 3 mm (1/8″) deep and 2.5 cm (1″) apart then thin to 15 cm (6″) apart. Occasionally caraway will self-sow and establish persistent stands in mild climates. Autumn sown seeds produce overwintering mature plants. Fruit loaded with seed ripens in the following August. When the fruit ripens, harvest entire plant. Dry in the sun. Protect from moisture. Caraway seeds are separated from dried fruit by beating dried flower heads.
