What you need to know to Plant & Grow Mary Washington Asparagus
Asparagus requires patience for the first three years, but the long-term rewards are well worth it.
- Site Selection: Select a sunny site with well-drained soil. Work large amounts of composted manure into the soil up to 30 cm deep. An ideal soil pH is in the range of 6.5 to 7.5.
- First Year (Sowing): Soak seeds in water for 2 days. Sow seeds 2.5 cm deep and 12.5 cm apart in rows spaced 45-60 cm apart. Germination occurs in 1-2 weeks. Once seedlings are 7.5 cm tall, thin them to 15 cm apart.
- Second Year (Transplanting): In mid-spring of the second year, transplant the 1-year-old roots to their permanent bed. Space them 45 cm apart in rows 1 m apart.
- Third Year (Harvesting): For the best long-term plant health, it is recommended to wait until the third year after sowing to begin a regular harvest.
- Upkeep: Each spring, mulch established plants with composted material. You can also work in large amounts of composted manure 30 cm deep to feed your plants.
