Buffalo Grass Seeds 8315
The Ultimate Low-Maintenance, Drought-Resistant Lawn Alternative.
If your summers are hot and dry and you are tired of the constant cycle of fertilizing, weeding, and watering, Buffalo Grass is the ideal solution. A hardy native of the North American prairie—with natural populations found in Saskatchewan and Manitoba—this is arguably our only truly indigenous turfgrass. It forms a dense, resilient sod by spreading through stolons, creating a beautiful lawn that thrives on neglect and withstands extreme drought. While it greens up about a month later than Kentucky Bluegrass in the spring, it stays vibrant all season with minimal care before going dormant after the first killing frost.

What you need to know to Plant & Grow
Buffalo Grass is a “patient” grower that rewards the gardener with a self-sustaining landscape. Our seeds are specially treated with potassium nitrate to enhance and accelerate germination.
-
Sowing Rates: Sow at a rate of 2–2.5 kg per 90 m² (5 lb per 1,000 ft²). For even coverage, apply twice at half-rate in a criss-cross pattern.
-
Timing: The best window for sowing is from late April through early June to take advantage of warming soil temperatures.
-
Preparation: Rake the area vigorously to remove debris and thatch. Fill in any low spots with fresh topsoil and rake level before seeding.
-
Germination: Be patient! Even with treatment, Buffalo Grass can take up to 30 days to sprout. Keep the seedbed moist with a fine spray during this entire period.
-
Care: Apply fertilizer only if required in late spring, or use a high-slow release type during dormancy. Avoid excessive foot traffic during the establishment phase.
