What you need to know to Plant & Grow

Establishing a native prairie or meadow is a rewarding process that requires patience. These mixes typically take 3 to 4 seasons to become fully established, but the sustainable results are well worth the wait.

  • Best Sowing Time: Late fall (Oct. 15 – Nov. 15) is ideal. This allows Mother Nature to naturally stratify the seeds over winter, “waking them up” for spring. Spring sowing in April is possible, but some seeds may remain dormant until the following year.

  • Site Preparation: Remove existing weeds and grass first. Loosen the soil to a 2.5 cm depth; native seeds struggle in compacted soil but thrive in a loose, well-drained bed.

  • Sowing: Broadcast seed evenly. For better distribution, mix smaller seeds with dry sand. Let rain, snow, and frost-heaving work the seeds into the soil naturally.

  • The “Nurse Crop” Secret: We recommend sowing a nurse crop (like annual rye or oats) at the same time. This quick-growing crop prevents erosion and suppresses weeds while your wildflowers establish. The nurse crop will naturally die out over the winter once its job is done.

  • Early Maintenance: In the first and second seasons, mow the site to a height of 20 cm a few times to keep aggressive weeds from overshadowing your slow-growing native seedlings.

Why this Native Mixture belongs on Your Property

The Cottage Country Mix is more than just a garden—it is a self-sustaining ecosystem. By choosing native species like Butterfly Weed and Wild Bergamot, you are providing essential habitat for monarch butterflies and songbirds. Once the establishment period of 3–4 years is complete, you will have a resilient, drought-tolerant landscape that requires no fertilizers and almost no watering, leaving you more time to enjoy your weekend getaway.
