Nutritional Information

Onions are a low-calorie addition to any meal, offering more than just flavour. They are a good source of Vitamin C, Vitamin B6, and Manganese, contributing to overall health. Onions also contain dietary fiber and potent antioxidants.

What you need to know to Plant & Grow

  • Sowing: Seed can be started indoors in a soil-less growing medium in February. The seedlings can then be transplanted outside later in spring. Seed can also be sown directly outdoors from mid-April, 8-15 mm deep and 15 mm apart in rows 30 cm apart. One packet sows approximately 6 m of row.
  • Care: Onions do best in a sunny site with fertile, well-drained soil. For best quality, keep onions evenly watered throughout the entire growing season. Bend over any flower stalks that start to grow so the plant’s energy goes into building the bulb.
  • Harvesting: Thin to 5 cm apart for cooking onions, and 7.5 cm apart for the sweet Spanish types. The thin neck is ideal for consistent drying, which allows for excellent long-term storage after harvest.
  • Germination: Germination occurs in 10-14 days.
