Nutritional Information
Peas are a powerhouse of garden nutrition. They are an excellent source of dietary fibre, plant-based protein, and Vitamin K. They also provide significant amounts of Vitamin C and B vitamins. Eating them fresh from the garden ensures you receive the highest concentration of nutrients and the peak sugary flavour that begins to starch over quickly after harvest.
What you need to know to Plant & Grow
Peas are a hardy, cool-weather crop that should be sown as soon as the soil can be worked in the spring.
-
Sowing Time: Plant from early April through mid-May when soil temperatures are between 10–16°C. Successive crops planted every 10–14 days will help maximize your harvest window.
-
Planting Depth & Spacing: Sow seeds 1.25–2.5 cm deep and 6.5 cm apart.
-
Row Setup: Plant in double rows spaced 25 cm apart, with 75 cm between each set of double rows. Alternatively, sow in 120 cm square blocks with seeds 6.5 cm apart.
-
Support: While these are largely bush-style varieties, providing a trellis or stake makes picking much easier and improves air circulation.
-
Care: Keep soil evenly moist during the 15-day germination period. Once flowering begins, ensure consistent watering to develop plump pods. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers, as peas fix their own nitrogen and excess can reduce pod production.
-
Pest Management: Removing clover and other non-crop legumes from the nearby area will help reduce potential pest problems.
