What you need to know to Plant & Grow
- Sowing: Seed can be started indoors in a soil-less growing medium in February for later transplanting. This variety is excellent for direct seeding outdoors from mid-April, 8-15 mm deep and 15 mm apart in rows 30 cm apart. One packet sows approximately 6 m of row.
- Care: Onions do best in a sunny site with fertile, well-drained soil. Thin to 5 cm apart for cooking onions, and 7.5 cm apart for the sweet Spanish types. Bend over any flower stalks that start to grow so the plant’s energy goes into building the bulb.
- Harvesting: Harvest bulbs when the tops start to yellow and fall over. Cure the onions to take advantage of their excellent keeping quality for long-term storage.
- Germination: Germination takes approximately 1-2 weeks (7-14 days).
