This is a Companion Planting Seed Collection containing four essential varieties: Blue Lake FM1 Pole Bean, Golden Bantam Sweet Corn, Butternut Squash, and Crackerjack Marigold. It creates a mutually beneficial ecosystem, improves soil health, provides natural pest control, and offers high yield potential.
Nutritional Information
This collection offers a triple harvest of nutrient-dense vegetables: Beans provide protein, iron, and fibre; Squash is rich in Vitamin A (beta-carotene) and Vitamin C; and Corn offers carbohydrates, fibre, and B vitamins. The overall system promotes healthier plants, resulting in more nutritious produce.
What you need to know to Plant & Grow
This kit uses a traditional method, enhanced by the powerful pest-repelling marigold. Plant once soil is warm and all danger of frost is past.
-
Sow Outdoors: Direct sow only when soil temperatures are warm and stable (late May to early June).
-
Planting Method: Plant the corn first in mounds or groups. Once the corn is 15 cm tall, plant the beans (near the corn) and the squash (around the perimeter). Interplant the Marigold seeds between the rows or near the base of the mounds.
-
Spacing: Plant in hills/mounds 90 cm apart, or in rows with corn 30 cm apart.
-
Symbiotic Benefits: The Corn provides a natural trellis for the Pole Beans. The Beans fix nitrogen in the soil, naturally fertilizing the heavy-feeding corn and squash. The large leaves of the Squash shade the ground, suppressing weeds and conserving moisture. The Marigold helps repel nematodes and certain insect pests. Full Sun and consistently moist, rich soil is essential.
