Nutritional Information
Bunching onions (scallions) are a low-calorie source of natural goodness. They are an excellent source of Vitamin K and Vitamin C, providing a health boost with every meal. They also contain ample Vitamin A (in the form of beta-carotene) and Folate.
What you need to know to Plant & Grow
- Sowing: Seed can be started indoors in a soil-less growing medium in February. The seedlings can then be transplanted outside later in spring. Seed can also be sown directly outdoors from mid-April, 8-15 mm deep and 15 mm apart in rows 30 cm apart. One packet sows approximately 6 m of row.
- Care: Onions do best in a sunny site with fertile, well-drained soil. For best quality, keep onions evenly watered throughout the entire growing season. Thin to 7.5 cm apart for bunching types. Bend over any flower stalks that start to grow so the plant’s energy goes into building the bulb.
- Harvesting: Ready for harvest throughout the summer and fall. Simply pull the bunching onions as needed. The plant’s excellent standing quality allows it to wait patiently in the garden until you need it.
- Germination: Germination occurs in 10-14 days.
