What you need to know to Plant & Grow
Growing French Endive is a two-part process that provides a fresh harvest in the middle of winter.
Growing the Roots: Sow seeds in early spring. In the autumn, once the foliage has died back, lift the roots. Keep only those that are at least 3 cm in diameter at the top. Cut off the foliage, leaving a 1 cm stub, then store the roots on their side, packed with dry sand or peat moss, in a cool, frost-free place. Germination takes approximately 2 weeks.
Forcing the Chicons: To force the roots, plant them upright in pots filled with sand or soilless peat mix. Lightly water the pots and keep them in a dark place at 10-15°C. The roots will begin to produce fresh ‘chicons’ for you to harvest and enjoy.
