What you need to know to Plant & Grow Agastache

Agastache is easy to grow and provides a huge payoff in terms of garden beauty and beneficial wildlife. While it’s a perennial in warmer climates (hardy to Zone 6), it’s best to grow it as an annual in most of Canada for a spectacular display all season long.

  • Sowing Indoors: For best results, sow seeds indoors in a soil-less mix in March. Lightly press the seeds onto the surface of the soil, barely covering them.
  • Germination: Keep the soil moist and maintain a temperature of 18°C. Germination typically takes 14-21 days.
  • Upkeep: Once the seedlings have sprouted, continue to grow them under lights at the same temperature. After the danger of frost has passed, harden off your plants by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions.
  • Transplanting: Transplant your hardened-off seedlings to a sunny spot in the garden or into containers, spacing them 30 cm apart in the garden.

Why Agastache belongs in Your Garden

Agastache is a must-have for any gardener who wants to support local wildlife. Its striking, colourful flowers are not only beautiful to look at but also provide a rich source of nectar for hummingbirds and beneficial insects, helping your garden’s ecosystem thrive. Whether you plant it in a dedicated pollinator garden, a mixed border, or a container on your patio, this easy-to-grow plant will reward you with a season-long display of vibrant blooms and a constant hum of happy visitors.
