Description

True Watercress Seeds 1505. Heirloom Vegetable.

Approx. 1,400 seeds/pkt (4,500 seeds/gram)

The True Watercress is a classic heirloom known for its crisp, pungent, and peppery flavour. While traditionally a semi-aquatic plant found along clean stream banks, it can be successfully grown in any moist spot or even in containers set in a saucer of water, making it accessible to all gardeners. It has a creeping growth habit, producing dark green leaves and stems with a delicious bite when harvested young. This nutritious green is also well-suited to hydroponic gardening and is reliably hardy outdoors to Zone 6, possibly even Zone 5.

Nutritional Information

Watercress is often cited as one of the most nutrient-dense foods available. It is an exceptional source of Vitamin K, Vitamin C, and Vitamin A, and contains high levels of beneficial antioxidants. The crisp, peppery flavour is the perfect way to add a healthy, zesty kick to salads, sandwiches, and soup garnishes.

What you need to know to Plant & Grow

Watercress requires consistent moisture, but its culture is surprisingly flexible, adapting well to container gardening.

  • Sowing: In a mostly sunny to lightly shaded area, you can scatter seeds directly along the waterline of a stream with clean, slowly moving water. Alternatively, start seeds in a container.

  • Container Culture: Fill a container with 5 cm to 7.5 cm of an open growing mix. Sow the seed on the surface and lightly cover with the growing medium, no more than 6 mm deep.

  • Watering: Set the container in a tray or saucer that you keep constantly filled with water. Never let the growing medium dry out. Change the water in the tray regularly to prevent stagnation.

  • Germination: Seed typically germinates in 7 to 10 days.

Harvest stems by cutting them off close to the soil line once they reach about 15 cm to 20 cm in length. Watercress becomes bitter if allowed to flower, so harvest often!
