Mountain Sandwort (Arenaria montana) is an exceptionally hardy perennial that forms dense, low-growing mats of fine, grey-green foliage. In early to mid-May, these evergreen cushions are almost entirely hidden by a blanket of crisp white flowers, each measuring 2.5 cm across. Reaching only 5–10 cm in height but spreading up to 30 cm, it is the perfect “living carpet” for filling crevices, softening the edges of stone walls, or adding delicate texture to alpine rock gardens.
