What you need to know to Plant & Grow
Atlantic Giants are heavy feeders that require maximum space, sun, and nutrients to reach their full potential.
-
Sow Outdoors: Direct sow from late May to early June once the soil is warm. Plant 2.5 cm deep in hills spaced at least 2.4 m apart.
-
Sow Indoors (Optional): Start 3 weeks before the plant-out date. Because pumpkins have sensitive roots, use paper or fibre pots that can be set directly in the soil to prevent transplant shock.
-
Germination: Fast-growing, typically occurring in 7–10 days.
-
Thinning: Plant 4–6 seeds per hill and thin to the 3 strongest plants once established.
-
Care: Provide Full Sun and deep, organic-rich soil. To grow a true contender, work in massive amounts of compost or well-rotted manure before planting.
-
Competition Tip: For maximum size, allow only one or two pumpkins to mature per plant, removing all other fruit to focus the plant’s energy.
-
Protection: Harvest before the first hard frost and protect mature fruit from cold temperatures to prevent soft spots.
