What you need to know to Plant & Grow Bitter Gourd

Bitter Gourd is a tropical vine that requires a very warm site and pre-germination for optimal success.

When to Plant: Sow seeds indoors in plantable pots 3 weeks before planting out, or directly outdoors in early to mid-June after all danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed.

How to Pre-Germinate: Soaking and scarification are key. Gently rub the seeds with fine sandpaper or a nail file to break the hard outer coat. Then, soak them in warm water for 24 hours. Alternatively, dampen a cloth, lay the seeds on it, roll it up, and place it in a dark, warm place for 3-5 days. Plant seeds immediately after this process.

Care: Plant pre-germinated seeds 2.5 cm deep and 2.5 cm apart in a very warm, sunny site with rich, organic soil. The ideal soil temperature is between 25°C and 35°C. Thin seedlings to 30 cm apart in rows spaced 90 cm apart. While they can grow on the ground, a trellis or support is highly recommended for best results. Water plants only when necessary to avoid overly wet soil. Harvest the fruit when young, cutting them from the vine rather than pulling.
