Description

Golden Crookneck Yellow Squash Seeds (Summer Type) 2220. Open Pollinated.

Approx. 20 seeds/pkt (10-12 seeds/gram)

A Prolific Summer Classic with Exceptional Flavour.

Golden Crookneck is a beloved heirloom favourite, prized for its early, heavy yields and distinctive “swan-neck” shape. The fruit features a bright yellow, slightly pebbled rind and a firm, meaty, creamy-white flesh that is far more flavourful than standard zucchinis. These plants grow in a sturdy, bush-style habit rather than a trailing vine, making them an excellent choice for smaller gardens or large containers like half-whisky barrels.

Quick Seed Details

  • Type: Open Pollinated Summer Squash

  • Fruit: Bright yellow with a curved neck; best picked at 15–20 cm

  • Flavour: Rich, buttery, and meaty texture

  • Ideal For: Sautéing, steaming, grilling, and container gardening.

What you need to know to Plant & Grow

Summer squash is a fast-growing, heat-loving crop that thrives in rich soil.

  • Sow Outdoors: Direct sow from late May to mid-June once the soil has warmed. Plant seeds 2.5 cm deep in “hills” spaced 2.4 m apart.

  • Sow Indoors (Optional): Start 3 weeks before the last frost. To avoid transplant shock, use paper or fibre pots that can be set directly into the garden soil.

  • Germination: Fast-acting, usually occurring in 7–10 days.

  • Thinning: Plant 4–6 seeds per hill and thin to the 3 strongest plants once established.

  • Care: Provide Full Sun and a deep, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Work in plenty of compost before planting to support the plant’s high productivity.

  • Harvesting: For the best culinary quality, harvest regularly when the fruit is between 15–20 cm long. Frequent harvesting encourages the plant to continue producing throughout the summer.

Why Golden Crookneck Seeds belong in Your Garden

If you are looking for a “workhorse” variety that is easy to grow and produces an abundance of food, Golden Crookneck is the perfect candidate. Its bushy growth makes it manageable for urban gardeners, while its superior texture and buttery flavour make it a standout in the kitchen. It is a reliable, high-yielding variety that has stood the test of time in Canadian gardens.
