The High-Drainage Septic-Safe Native Seed Mixture is our only native blend time tested for use over septic beds. Featuring a diverse range of shapes and colours, this mixture is engineered to thrive in the well-drained, often nutrient-poor conditions of sand and gravel. By combining hardy native perennials with a non-invasive nurse crop, this blend provides an attractive, low-maintenance cover that stabilizes soil without interfering with delicate underground systems.

What you need to know to Plant & Grow

Establishing a native septic bed cover requires patience, as these mixtures typically take three to four years to become fully established and self-sustaining.

  • Best Sowing Time: Late fall (Oct. 15 – Nov. 15) is ideal. Winter weather naturally stratifies the seeds, breaking their dormancy for spring. Spring sowing in April is possible, but some varieties may stay dormant until the following year.

  • Site Preparation: Clear existing weeds manually or with an organic herbicide. Loosen the soil to a 2.5 cm depth; native seeds establish far better in loose soil than in compacted topsoil.

  • Sowing: Broadcast seed evenly. To ensure even distribution of the smaller seeds, mix the blend with dry sand before sowing. Mother Nature (rain and snow) will work the seeds into the soil bed.

  • Early Maintenance: During the first two seasons, mow the area to a height of 20 cm a few times. This prevents aggressive weeds from overshadowing the slow-growing native seedlings while they establish their root systems.

Why this Native Mixture belongs on Your Property

Maintaining a septic bed doesn’t have to mean a boring patch of lawn. This mixture offers a beautiful, ecologically sound alternative that supports local pollinators like bees and butterflies. The inclusion of Perennial Ryegrass acts as a built-in nurse crop, providing immediate soil stabilization and weed suppression while the permanent native flowers and grasses take hold. It is the perfect “set it and forget it” solution for rural homeowners looking for functional beauty.
