Description

Sunshine Squash Seeds (Kobacha Winter Type) 2275. Hybrid.

Approx. 8 seeds/pkt (10-12 seeds/gram)

An Award-Winning Kabocha with Sweet, Nutty Flavour.

Sunshine is a premium hybrid Kabocha-type winter squash that lives up to its name with a brilliant, orange-red rind. Inside, you will find thick, intensely orange flesh that is remarkably smooth and entirely stringless, regardless of how you cook it. With a sweet, nutty flavour that often surpasses traditional pumpkins, this squash is perfect for baking, steaming, or mashing. It produces attractive, slightly flattened (oblate) fruits weighing between 1.5–2 kg on vigorous yet surprisingly compact vines.

What you need to know to Plant & Grow

Winter squash requires a warm growing season and nutrient-dense soil to develop its signature sweetness.

  • Sow Outdoors: Direct sow from late May to mid-June once the soil has warmed. Plant 2.5 cm deep in “hills” spaced 2.4 m apart.

  • Sow Indoors (Optional): Start 3 weeks before the last frost. Because squash have sensitive taproots, use paper or fibre pots that can be transplanted directly into the soil to avoid root disturbance.

  • Germination: Fast-acting, typically occurring in 7–10 days.

  • Thinning: Plant 4–6 seeds per hill and thin to the 3 strongest plants once the first true leaves appear.

  • Care: Provide Full Sun and deep, well-drained organic soil (pH 5.5 to 6.5). Work in a generous amount of compost before planting to support the vigorous growth of the fruit.

  • Protection: Harvest before the first hard frost. Curing the squash in a warm, dry place for a week will help toughen the skin for long-term storage.
