How to Grow a Thriving Lawn
New Lawns:
- Prepare the soil: Spread a 5 cm layer of topsoil. Break up any clumps and rake the area to a smooth, even surface.
- Sow the seed: Apply the seed at a rate of 1.5 kg per 75 m². For best results, use a spreader and apply half the seed in one direction, then the other half in a perpendicular direction (a criss-cross pattern).
- Cover and Roll: Lightly rake the seed into the soil so it’s barely covered. If your soil is light, you can use a roller at half capacity to gently firm the area.
Repairing Existing Lawns:
- Prep the area: Mow your existing grass close to the soil. Vigorously rake the area to remove clippings and thatch.
- Add topsoil: Fill in any low spots with new topsoil and rake smooth.
- Sow the seed: Apply the seed at a rate of 1.5 kg per 150 m², using a criss-cross pattern to ensure even coverage.
- Cover and Roll: Lightly rake the seed into the soil.
Tips for Success:
- Planting Time: Sow in the spring once the soil warms up, or from mid-August to late September.
- Germination: Expect germination in 10-14 days. Keep in mind that cold soil can lengthen this time.
- Watering: Use a fine spray to keep the seedbed moist for the first two to three weeks. Once established, water deeply and infrequently to promote a strong root system.
- Mowing: Mow your new lawn for the first time when it reaches 8 cm in height. Once established, maintain a height of 8 cm. Never remove more than one-third of the grass blade’s height during a single mowing. This helps the grass maintain its strength and prevents it from going into shock.
