What you need to know to Plant & Grow
For the healthiest growth, cucumbers thrive in a wind-sheltered site with a rich, warm sandy loam. Plant seeds after the danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed to at least 18°C. Cooler soil can lead to poor germination.
Nurturing Your Plants: Sow seeds 2 cm deep, with 8 seeds per hill in hills spaced 120-150 cm apart. After the seeds sprout, thin to 3-4 plants per hill. For an early start to the season, you can start seeds indoors in fibre pots 3 to 5 weeks before planting out. Wait until early June to transplant outdoors to avoid cool nights and blossom end drop. Cucumbers are shallow rooted, so they need a consistent, even supply of water. Water early in the morning to prevent mildew on the foliage. Harvest cucumbers by cutting them from the vine with a sharp knife. Germination occurs in 7-10 days.
