What you need to know to Plant & Grow
Peanuts have a unique way of growing: after the plant flowers, the flower stalks (called “pegs”) elongate and grow downward, burying themselves in the soil where the peanut pods eventually develop. Providing a light, sandy soil is key to ensuring these pegs can easily penetrate the ground to maximize your successful crop yield.
Peanuts are a warm-weather crop that requires patience and a specific curing process after harvest.
-
Sowing Time: Plant from mid-May to the first of June, only once the soil temperature has reached at least 21°C.
-
Planting Depth & Spacing: Sow seeds 2.5–5 cm deep and 12.5 cm apart in rows spaced 90 cm apart.
-
Thinning: Once established, thin seedlings to 25 cm apart.
-
Germination: Typically occurs in 1 to 2 weeks.
-
Care: Choose a warm, sunny site with sandy, open soil. Keep the plants evenly watered and the area strictly weeded to allow the “pegs” to reach the soil unobstructed.
-
Harvesting & Curing: Dig up the entire plant after the first light frost in the fall. Hang the whole plant in a dry garage or basement to cure. Do not rush this stage; the drier the peanuts are, the better they will roast.
Roasting Your Harvest
Once the peanuts are fully cured and the moisture content is low, they are ready for the oven:
-
Shelled Peanuts: Roast at 175–190°C for 15 to 20 minutes.
-
In-Shell Peanuts: Roast at 175–190°C for 20 to 25 minutes.
