What you need to know to Plant & Grow
Zinnias are heat-loving specialists that perform best when the soil is warm and the sun is bright.
-
Sow Outdoors: Direct sow in late May once the soil has warmed. Avoid planting too early, as cool, damp soil can lead to seed rot. Barely cover the seed with soil.
-
Sow Indoors (Optional): For earlier flowers, start in mid-March using peat pots or Jiffy-7s to avoid root disturbance. Sow 6 mm deep and maintain a temperature of 22°C.
-
Germination: Under ideal conditions, sprouts will appear in 5–10 days.
-
Growing On: Once germinated, grow at a cooler 15°C to develop sturdy stems before hardening off and transplanting in late May.
-
Spacing: Because this is a taller variety, thin or transplant seedlings to 35 cm apart to allow for proper airflow and support.
-
Care: Choose a sunny site with well-drained organic soil. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage constant new growth.
