What you need to know to Plant & Grow
Watermelons are heat-loving plants that require consistent warmth and moisture to produce sweet, mature fruit.
-
Sow Indoors: Starting indoors 3 to 4 weeks before the last frost is recommended in short-season areas. Use biodegradable pots to minimise root disturbance.
-
Sow Outdoors: Direct sow seeds into thoroughly warmed soil after all danger of frost has passed.
-
Germination: Seed requires a soil temperature of 24°C to germinate properly. Germination occurs in 5 to 10 days.
-
Planting Depth: 12 mm
-
Spacing: Sow 6 to 8 seeds per hill, 12 mm deep, in hills spaced 1.8 m to 2.4 m from each other. Thin to 3 to 4 plants per hill.
Provide a site with Full Sun and rich, well-drained soil. Never let the plants lack for water, especially when the fruit is setting. Harvest when the skin turns a very dark colour and the little tendril closest to the fruit stem is dry.
