This is the ultimate lawn seed mixture for challenging conditions, perfect for your beach home or cottage. This blend is specifically formulated to create a durable, low-maintenance lawn that thrives where other grasses fail.
Key Benefits
- Tolerates Poor & Dry Soil: The grasses in this blend are exceptionally resilient, thriving in the sandy, nutrient-poor soil often found near lakes and coastlines.
- Withstands Heavy Traffic: Once established, this lawn can handle foot traffic from family gatherings and outdoor activities without wearing out.
- Versatile for Sun & Shade: It performs well in full sun, but also grows quite successfully in areas with up to a half day of shade.
- Low Maintenance: This blend is a mix of Turf Type Perennial Ryegrass and Chewings Fescue, two grasses known for their hardiness and ability to look great with minimal care.
Create a beautiful, tough lawn that you can enjoy all season long, with less work and more time for relaxation.
How to Grow a Thriving Lawn
New Lawns:
- Prepare the soil: Spread a 5 cm layer of topsoil. Break up any clumps and rake the area to a smooth, even surface.
- Sow the seed: Apply the seed at a rate of 1 kg per 25 m². For best results, use a spreader and apply half the seed in one direction, then the other half in a perpendicular direction (a criss-cross pattern).
- Cover and Roll: Lightly rake the seed into the soil so it’s barely covered. If your soil is light, you can use a roller at half capacity to gently firm the area.
Repairing Existing Lawns:
- Prep the area: Mow your existing grass close to the soil. Vigorously rake the area to remove clippings and thatch.
- Add topsoil: Fill in any low spots with new topsoil and rake smooth.
- Sow the seed: Apply the seed at a rate of 1 kg per 50 m², using a criss-cross pattern to ensure even coverage.
- Cover and Roll: Lightly rake the seed into the soil.
Tips for Success:
- Planting Time: Sow in the spring once the soil warms up, or from mid-August to late September.
- Germination: Expect germination in 2-3 weeks. Keep in mind that cold soil can lengthen this time.
- Watering: Use a fine spray to keep the seedbed moist for the first two to three weeks. Once established, water deeply and infrequently to promote a strong root system.
- Mowing: Mow your new lawn for the first time when it reaches 8 cm in height. Once established, maintain a height of 8 cm. Never remove more than one-third of the grass blade’s height during a single mowing. This helps the grass maintain its strength and prevents it from going into shock.
- Non-maintained areas: This blend will reach a mature height of about 30-35 cm in non-maintained areas.
