Description

Blazing Star Seeds 6960 (Liatris spicata). Native of Canada. Perennial.

Approx. 100 seeds/pkt (285 seeds/gram)

A Spectacular Native Gem for Pollinator and Butterfly Gardens.

Blazing Star (Liatris spicata), also known as Gayfeather, is a rare and striking species of the Ontario prairie. Unlike most spiked flowers that bloom from the bottom up, Blazing Star produces magnificent purple flower spikes that open from the top down, creating a spectacular display from July through September. Reaching heights of 60–120 cm, its unique vertical form and grassy foliage make it a standout choice for borders, rock gardens, and meadow restorations.

Note: This valuable native wildflower should not be confused with the invasive Purple Loosestrife; they are entirely different plants with very different ecological roles.

What you need to know to Plant & Grow

In its natural habitat, Blazing Star is often found in moist prairies or sedge meadows, making it a great choice for areas with consistent moisture.

  • Sow Outdoors (Recommended): Direct sow in late fall to allow the seeds to undergo natural winter stratification. This “wakes up” the dormant seeds, ensuring a more uniform and vigorous sprout in the spring.

  • Sow Indoors: Start seeds in early March using a soilless mix. For the best results, seeds require a cold treatment: place the moistened planting tray in a refrigerator or outside to freeze for 10 days.

  • Germination: After the cold treatment, move the tray to a warm spot (20°C) under lights. Germination typically occurs within 10–30 days.

  • Care: Once germinated, grow seedlings under lights at a slightly cooler temperature before hardening off and transplanting to a sunny garden site.

Why Blazing Star Seeds belong in Your Garden

If you want to witness a literal “parade” of butterflies, Blazing Star is the plant to choose. It is widely considered one of the best nectar sources for the Monarch butterfly and a host of native bees. Its sturdy, wind-resistant stems and unique blooming habit provide architectural interest that lasts well into the autumn. By planting this rare Ontario native, you are helping to preserve a beautiful piece of our local prairie heritage.
