Description

Carmine Velour Hybrid Wave Petunia Seeds (Ground Cover Type) 5990.

AAS Winner Producing a Spreading Carpet of Rich Velvety Red Blooms.

Carmine Velour Hybrid Wave Petunia (Petunia x hybrida) is an All-America Selections (AAS) winner renowned for its extraordinary spreading habit and relentless bloom power. As part of the world-famous Wave series, this high-performance annual requires no pinching, with a single plant spreading up to 1.5 m across while hugging the ground at just 15 cm in height. Rich, velvety red blossoms measuring 5 to 7.5 cm across completely smother the lush foliage from early summer until late autumn. Ideal as a sprawling ground cover in sunny garden beds or as a dramatic cascading centerpiece for hanging baskets and window boxes. (Note: Wave Petunias will not tolerate foot traffic).

What you need to know to Plant & Grow

Wave Petunias perform best when started indoors with warm soil temperatures and high light before transplanting outside after all frost risks have passed.

  • Indoor Sowing (Recommended): Start pelleted seeds indoors in a sterile soil-less mix 6 to 8 weeks before planting out in late spring. Surface sow seeds directly on top of the medium—do not cover, as light is necessary for germination.

  • Pellet Dissolution & Germination: Gently mist sown seeds with water until the protective coating dissolves completely—dissolving the pellet is required for germination to occur. Apply bottom heat to maintain a soil temperature of 25°C throughout the 14-day germination period (cooler temperatures will extend germination time).

  • Growing On & Transplanting: Move seedlings under lights at a cooler temperature of 15°C after germination. Harden off young plants carefully and transplant outside in late May once spring frost risks have passed, spacing plants 25 cm apart in full sun.

  • Care & Feeding: Provide consistent moisture and feed regularly with a balanced liquid fertilizer to power its rapid growth and continuous velvet bloom production all season long.
