How to Grow a Thriving Lawn

New Lawns:

  1. Prepare the soil: Spread a 5 cm layer of topsoil. Break up any clumps and rake the area to a smooth, even surface.
  2. Sow the seed: Apply the seed at a rate of 1.5 kg per 60 m². For best results, use a spreader and apply half the seed in one direction, then the other half in a perpendicular direction (a criss-cross pattern).
  3. Cover and Roll: Lightly rake the seed into the soil so it’s barely covered. If your soil is light, you can use a roller at half capacity to gently firm the area.

Repairing Existing Lawns:

  1. Prep the area: Mow your existing grass close to the soil. Vigorously rake the area to remove clippings and thatch.
  2. Add topsoil: Fill in any low spots with new topsoil and rake smooth.
  3. Sow the seed: Apply the seed at a rate of 1.5 kg per 90 m², using a criss-cross pattern to ensure even coverage.
  4. Cover and Roll: Lightly rake the seed into the soil.

Tips for Success:

  • Planting Time: Sow in the spring once the soil warms up, or from mid-August to late September.
  • Germination: Expect germination in 10-21 days. Keep in mind that cold soil can lengthen this time.
  • Watering: Use a fine spray to keep the seedbed moist for the first two to three weeks. Once established, water deeply and infrequently to promote a strong root system.
  • Mowing: Mow your new lawn for the first time when it reaches 9 cm in height. Once established, maintain a height of 9-11 cm. Never remove more than one-third of the grass blade’s height during a single mowing. This helps the grass maintain its strength and prevents it from going into shock.
