Mouse Melon Cucumber Seeds 1623. Heirloom Vegetable.

Approximately 20 seeds per packet (35 seeds per gram)

Known by several fun names including Cucamelon and Mexican Gherkin, this heirloom variety is a true garden curiosity. These plants produce large numbers of grape-sized fruits with a marbled skin that resembles tiny watermelons. Don’t let their size fool you! These little “sanditas” have the crisp crunch and taste of a cucumber but with a refreshing burst of sour lemon. They’re perfect for stir-fries, pickling, salsa, or even as a unique addition to cocktails.

Quick Seed Details

  • Type: Heirloom Cucumber (Cucamelon)
  • Fruit: Grape-sized with a marbled watermelon-like skin
  • Features: Cucumber taste with a sour lemon twist; perfect for pickling, fresh eating, and more; best grown on a trellis.

What you need to know to Plant & Grow

Cucumbers grow best in a rich, warm, sandy loam soil. Before planting, work large amounts of garden compost or composted manure into the native soil, about 30 cm deep. Wait until the soil has reached a temperature of at least 18°C before planting, as cooler soil can reduce germination and cause the seed to rot.

Planting: Mound the soil into hills about 15-20 cm high and 30-60 cm across. Space the hills about 120 cm apart. Sow 6 to 8 seeds 2 cm deep in each hill. After they sprout, thin to 3 or 4 plants per hill. We highly suggest growing this variety on a trellis or other structure to support the long vines and to make harvesting the tiny fruits much easier.

Care: Protect the plants from any late spring or early summer frosts. Keep the plants evenly watered throughout the growing season, as consistent soil moisture is very important to prevent bitterness. To prevent damage to the vine, harvest the cucumbers by cutting them with a sharp knife instead of pulling or twisting them. Germination occurs in 7-10 days.
