Description

Scarlet Flax Seeds 6930 (Linum rubrum). Open Pollinated. Hardy Annual.

Approx. 200 seeds/pkt (290 seeds/gram)

This introduced species native to North Africa and southern Europe enjoys sun to partial shade and is very tolerant of dry soils. Considered a hardy annual that often self-sows. Scarlet Flax is excellent for quick, intense summer colour and contrasting rich green foliage. Plants reach an approximate height of 45 cm. While each flower typically only lasts a day, due to the large number produced by each plant, flowering is pretty well continuous from late June through to August. The effect where massed is quite pretty.

How to Grow

Sow seed indoors in a soil-less mix in mid-April using plantable peat pots as scarlet flax does not transplant well. Cover seed very lightly and keep at 20° C for the 5 to 10 day germination period. After germination, grow on under lights at a slightly cooler temperature then harden off and transplant outside to a sunny site. We recommend sowing this plant directly outdoors in late fall or in mid-May either in rows or lightly broadcast in larger areas. Thin seedlings to stand 20 cm apart when grown in gardens to try to maintain a tidy appearance.
